When to Seek Medical Attention

Eye emergencies come in various forms, and dealing with them can be stressful. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible:

  • Eye pain
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • A foreign object in your eye
  • Sudden onset of flashes, floaters, or spots in your vision
  • Swelling around your eye
  • Corneal abrasion
  • Significant discharge from your eye

If you get any chemicals in your eye, call our office and seek immediate medical attention.

How to Approach Common Eye Emergencies

Some eye emergencies happen more often than others. If you or someone you know experiences one of these common eye emergencies, here are a few first aid strategies you can use to help.

Chemical Contact

Chemical contact can cause significant damage to your eye. If you get any chemicals in your eye, you should flush your eye immediately using cool, clean water and continue rinsing for at least 15 minutes.

Even if your eye begins to feel better before the full 15 minutes have passed, it’s essential that you keep flushing your eye. This process will help ensure that any remaining chemical residue is diluted and washed away.

Once you have finished flushing your eye, call The Village Eye Care team for assistance or proceed to your nearest emergency room.

If there is something embedded in your eye, you should not rub your eye or attempt to remove the object on your own, as this can cause further damage. Instead, you should either call The Village Eye Care or proceed to your nearest emergency room.

If there is something loosely floating in your eye or trapped under your eyelid, you may be able to dislodge it by flushing your eye with clean, cool water. Do not rub your eye, as this may cause further damage. Even if you can remove the object by flushing your eye, you should still seek immediate medical attention.

If you can’t remove the object by flushing, do not try to remove it using your fingers or a pair of tweezers since this could cause further damage.

Our cornea, the clear front surface of the eye that covers our iris and pupil, is incredibly sensitive and can easily be damaged. Even a slight impact or a small scratch can be incredibly painful and may leave your eye vulnerable to infection.

If you experience a corneal abrasion, do not rub your eye. Rubbing your eye may move debris around and cause further damage. You can try to remove debris by flushing your eye with cool, clean water. However, even if you can dislodge the debris on your own, you should still seek immediate medical attention for a corneal abrasion. Call The Village Eye Care right away or proceed to your nearest emergency room.

If you suspect you or someone you know is experiencing an eye emergency, contact The Village Eye Care immediately at (623) 748-1754 for a same-day emergency appointment or proceed to your nearest emergency room.
