What Causes Dry Eyes

Dry eye disease has two causes: poor quality tears or insufficient tear volume. Our eyes rely on tears to keep them lubricated. If we aren’t able to produce enough tears, or the tears we produce don’t contain enough oil or mucin, our eyes become dry and irritated.

Insufficient Tear Volume

Tears are produced by several different glands located in and around our eyelids. For some of us, particularly as we get older, our eyelids are not able to produce as many tears, causing dryness. Some medications and medical conditions can also impact tear production.

Even if our eyes are able to produce enough tears, other factors such as a dry climate or wind can cause our tears to evaporate too quickly. This can leave our eyes irritated and red.

Our tears are made up of three main ingredients: mucin, water, and oil (called meibum). The mucin helps spread our tears evenly over the surface of our eyes, and the meibum helps ensure that our tears don’t evaporate too quickly. If our tears don’t contain enough mucin or meibum, they can’t lubricate our eyes properly, causing dry eyes.
